The purchasing power of money held in a checking account or a certificate of deposit decreases a little each year. The interest rate paid by financial institutions for these types of accounts usually does not keep up with inflation. While this may not have a substantial impact over a few years, it will have a profound effect over many years. If an organization is holding funds for a long time, it may be appropriate to invest in a variety of securities (see Ecclesiastes 11:2) to keep pace with or exceed inflation.
