Holiday Giving
The holiday season is upon us once again. Along with the holidays comes tremendous pressure to buy gifts for those we love, care for, know or those that have given to us in the past.
For many people, this pressure to buy gifts results in spending money we don’t have to get presents that won’t be appreciated. So, how do you participate in the holiday season without mortgaging your future?
First, make a budget. I know, it is not high on you holiday to-do list, but a budget will help you keep everything in focus. When you find that perfect “must-have” item, you can compare the cost against your budget to make an informed, not emotional, decision.
Second, make a list. Who is really important to you? Not everyone carries the same level of relevance in your life. Some people should get a gift of some kind, while for others a card with a personal note may be quite appropriate.
Finally, make a pie! By that, I mean to be creative. Not all gifts that you give must come from a store. And homemade gifts are often more appreciated. So, while you may not be able to make or afford an Apple iPad, you might be able to make an apple dumpling!
Let’s remember, the greatest gift ever given was not purchased. It was freely given at a cost that no one could ever afford and, unlike most gifts given and received this Christmas, we will spend an eternity appreciating.
